Quarry Tile & Thin Brick
Metropolitan Ceramics offers both quarry tile and thin brick products manufactured in our plant in Canton, Ohio. Metropolitan Ceramics’ parent company – Ironrock – is a fifth-generation family-owned company with an over 150-year history of manufacturing the finest brick and tile products. Metropolitan Ceramics’ quarry tile has decades of use and millions of square feet installed throughout the United States.
Metropolitan Ceramics has two thin brick products available – METROBRICK and Royal Thin Brick. These are true kiln-fired thin bricks that install like tile on any substrate suitable for ceramic tile.
METROBRICK is a traditional modular brick. Royal Thin Brick is a taller queen size and tumbled for a weathered appearance. Use our thin brick indoors and out – METROBRICK on vertical surfaces. Royal Thin Brick on both walls and floors.
What is Quarry Tile?
Quarry tiles are not produced in a quarry as might be suggested by the name. They are manufactured. High quality quarry tiles are made from a mixture of natural ingredients including clays, shales and feldspar.
They are extruded through a die and cut. This extrusion process creates a much tighter/denser body than can be achieved through other processes. The die also creates a ribbed back on the tile to improve mortar adhesion. Once extruded, the tiles are sent through a drier and fired in a kiln.
Because high quality quarry tiles are extruded and unglazed, they are both naturally appealing and very practical. These tiles are slip resisting and are an excellent choice for areas subject to heavy spills and moisture. They also perform well in outdoor applications – even in extreme climates.

XA Abrasive quarry tile provides an extra level of protection with both silicon carbide embedded in the surface and a metallic additive throughout the tile. XA Abrasive has a coefficient of friction of ≥.70 at the time of manufacture.
